About the person
Hans-Otto Thomashoff, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst based in Vienna, affiliated with the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. His unique interdisciplinary expertise is enhanced by a PhD in art history, which informs his specialization in psychodynamic approaches to understanding art. Thomashoff holds the position of honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and serves as the president of the WPA section on Art and Psychiatry. Additionally, he is the chair of WADP Austria and a member of the supervisory board of the Sigmund Freud Privatstiftung.
Thomashoff is also an active curator of art exhibitions, notably “Psyche and Art” among others, showcasing his commitment to exploring the intersection of art and psychoanalysis. His contributions extend to the translation of psychoanalytic literature and authoring non-fiction books that integrate brain research with psychoanalytic insights. Furthermore, he is a member of P.E.N. International, reflecting his engagement with the broader literary and intellectual community.

Hans-Otto Thomashoff, MD, PhD, lebt und arbeitet als Psychiater und Psychoanalytiker in Wien und ist Mitglied der Wiener Psychoanalytischen Gesellschaft. Durch seinen Doktortitel in Kunstgeschichte hat er sich auf psychodynamische Ansätze zum Verständnis von Kunst spezialisiert. Thomashoff ist Ehrenmitglied der Welt-Psychiatrievereinigung (WPA) und Präsident der WPA-Sektion für Kunst und Psychiatrie. Zudem ist er Vorsitzender der WADP Österreich und Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats der Sigmund Freud Privatstiftung.
Thomashoff ist auch als Kurator von Kunstausstellungen aktiv, insbesondere für die Ausstellung „Psyche und Kunst“ unter anderen, was sein Engagement für die Erforschung der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst und Psychoanalyse unterstreicht. Seine Beiträge umfassen auch das Übersetzen psychoanalytischer Literatur und das Verfassen von Sachbüchern, die Hirnforschung mit psychoanalytischen Einsichten verbinden. Darüber hinaus ist er Mitglied des P.E.N. International, was sein Engagement in der breiteren literarischen und intellektuellen Gemeinschaft widerspiegelt.
