About the person
Dr. Baiju Gopal is a Professor at the School of Psychological Sciences ,CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India. He has 22 years of teaching and research experience in psychology. Dr.Gopal was also the Project Director of the 21st century US-Indo Knowledge initiative award in Partnership between Miami University, Ohio, USA, and Christ University, Karnataka, India. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Calicut, Kerala, on the concept of madness and its management: The Kerala Scenario. Dr. Gopal is also an affiliate of the Indian psychoanalytical society Kolkata affiliated to the international psychoanalytical Association London.
His areas of interest lie in qualitative research methodology, cultural psychology, and psychoanalysis. He has publications in national, international journals and books. He also presented papers at national and international conferences.
He has travelled overseas and given guest lectures at the University of Toronto, Canada, and Miami University, Ohio Oxford, USA. He was also one of the keynote speakers of the conference on integrating south Asian Healing Traditions into Counselling, Psychology, and psychotherapy held at the University of Toronto Canada in 2017. He also presented papers at the ABCT conference in Atlanta, USA, in 2019. Dr Gopal was invited for a webinar on culture and mental health in December 2020 at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He was also presented a paper on Divinity and Healing in the Tradition of Shamanic Practices in South India at Roehampton University, London, UK.
His effort to bring qualitative research methodology, psychoanalytic thinking, and cultural psychology perspectives in south India needs special mention.
Apart from the academic interest, Dr. Gopal also believes in the artistic expression of self. He is a trained playback theatre actor and part of a theatre group called ‘The Actors Collective’ Bangalore. He is part of the core team of actors and regularly performs in different shows. He also a documentary film maker. He directed documentary titled Spells possession and madness (2019), The Gods from the Inferno (2022) and May I have a song for her (2024). His documentary The gods from the inferno being awarded the ‘The honorary jury mention ‘at the 13th Dada Saheb Phalke film festival 2023 and best documentary in the 12th Kolkata shorts film festival 2023. He received the Best Director Award for the documentary film May I Have a Song for Her at the 11th Rajasthan International Film Festival 2025.

Dr. Gopal war zudem Projektleiter der US-Indo Knowledge Initiative des 21. Jahrhunderts – eine Partnerschaft zwischen der Miami University, Ohio, USA, und der Christ University, Karnataka, Indien. Seinen Ph.D. erlangte er an der University of Calicut, Kerala, mit einer Dissertation zum Thema „Das Konzept von Wahnsinn und sein Umgang: Das Kerala-Szenario“. Darüber hinaus ist Dr. Gopal Mitglied der Indian Psychoanalytical Society Kolkata, die der International Psychoanalytical Association London angeschlossen ist.
Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen in der qualitativen Forschungsmethodik, der kulturellen Psychologie sowie der Psychoanalyse. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Arbeiten in nationalen und internationalen Fachzeitschriften und Sammelbänden und präsentierte seine Forschungsergebnisse auf diversen Konferenzen weltweit.
Dr. Gopal hielt Gastvorträge unter anderem an der University of Toronto, Kanada, und der Miami University, Ohio, USA. 2017 war er Keynote Speaker auf der Konferenz zur Integration südasiatischer Heiltraditionen in Beratung, Psychologie und Psychotherapie an der University of Toronto. 2019 präsentierte er ein Paper auf der ABCT-Konferenz in Atlanta, USA. Im Dezember 2020 wurde er zu einem Webinar zum Thema Kultur und psychische Gesundheit an der Universität Leipzig, Deutschland, eingeladen. Zudem präsentierte er seine Arbeit „Divinity and Healing in the Tradition of Shamanic Practices in South India“ an der Roehampton University, London, UK. Sein besonderes Anliegen ist es, qualitative Forschungsmethoden, psychoanalytisches Denken und kulturpsychologische Perspektiven in den südindischen Kontext zu integrieren.
Neben seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit ist Dr. Gopal auch künstlerisch aktiv. Er ist ausgebildeter Playback-Theaterdarsteller und Mitglied der Theatergruppe „The Actors Collective“ Bangalore, wo er regelmäßig auf der Bühne steht. Außerdem ist er Dokumentarfilmer. Er führte Regie bei den Filmen „Spells, Possession and Madness“ (2019), „The Gods from the Inferno“ (2022) und „May I Have a Song for Her“ (2024). Sein Film „The Gods from the Inferno“ erhielt eine ehrenvolle Erwähnung der Jury beim 13. Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2023 und wurde als Beste Dokumentation beim 12. Kolkata Shorts Film Festival 2023 ausgezeichnet. Für „May I Have a Song for Her“ wurde er beim 11. Rajasthan International Film Festival 2025 als Bester Regisseur ausgezeichnet.
